Common hamster mapping and Protection
Mapping of burrows of the Common Hamster (Cricetus cricetus)
The common hamster (Cricetus cricetus) is a strictly protected species according to the Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive (FFH). We offer common hamster mapping services. Based on our extensive experience in working with common hamsters, we conduct winter and summer burrow mapping. In addition to the standard method, we also conduct drone mapping. For the burrows found, GPS coordinates are recorded and documented with photographs. After the mapping we will send you a report of the survey including a map of the surveyed area with marked and numbered common hamster burrows as well as detailed information about the burrows found.

Theory Workshop Hamster Mapping
During the common hamster mapping workshop, we train your employees on the habitat requirements of the common hamster, its endangerment and protective measures. We teach the safe determination of common hamster burrows in a practical way on the basis of: burrow tube depth, burrow tube diameter as well as the differentiation from mice burrows, the differentiation of summer burrow and winter burrow, the determination of slip and drop tubes. In a sample mapping we measure burrows together, fill out a protocol and give hints for the preparation of expertises

Common hamster mapping
The Common hamster is threatened with extinction. This makes it increasingly difficult to develop an eye for identifying burrows in the field. The European hamster mapping practical training gives your employees the opportunity to gain further training on areas where hamsters are present under supervision. We start with a theoretical introduction to the habitat requirements of the European hamster, its endangerment and protective measures. We then teach the correct identification of Common hamster burrows on the basis of: Tube depth, tube diameter as well as the delimitation of mouse burrows, the differentiation between summer and winter burrows, the determination of hatching and drop tubes. In a mapping exercise, we measure burrows together, fill out a protocol and provide information for the preparation of a report. Participants receive a protocol and a folding rule. We offer the training in spring and fall on sites in Thuringia. We can also provide instruction in drone mapping on request. We are also happy to issue certificates of attendance.

Talk “The last common hamsters”
For the film “The Last Common Hamsters”, I worked intensively and worldwide on the common hamster for over three years. I mapped countless areas, observed individuals in the long term and documented hamsters in various countries. In the presentation, I give insights into the making of the nature film and show photos and video footage of the endangered species.
